Small Business Saturday - Shopping Small Can Make a Big Difference

With the holiday season approaching, many of us will be searching for the "perfect gifts". It is easy to get wrapped up in the deals and special hours involved in Black Friday, and it can be a great way to save money. However making sure to also "shop small" on Small Business Saturday can be a great way to make an impact on your local community and find some unique items while you are at it!

3 Good Reasons to Shop Small

  1. More money stays in your local economy! Small businesses put more money back into the local economy than larger chains.
  2. Unique products. You are more likely to find unique and one-of-a-kind items when shopping small. Many small businesses incorporate handmade or locally sourced items into their shops. Not only are you supporting one local business, you may be supporting several.
  3. It makes you feel good! This may be a selfish reason, but walking out of a local store or restaurant after making a purchase feels great. Not only did you find something great or eat something delicious, you just put your money right back into the pocket of your community.

3 Ways to Prep Your Small Business

  1. Promote your small business! Put out ads (online and in print), send direct mail pieces, and use word of mouth. Let everyone know how great your business is and why they should be shopping local with you!
  2. Come up with a Small Business Saturday in-store promotion. Do you offer classes? Why not offer a trial class for free? Maybe the first 50 customers in the store that day get a free product. Perhaps everyone who makes a purchase gets their name entered in a giveaway of a larger prize. No matter what you decide, having an in-store promotion can help generate some excitement about coming in that day.
  3. Get online! Promote your Small Business Saturday deals, store hours and more online. If you have a website, make sure it is ready! Perhaps even have a special offer for people to bring in from your website. Get on social media! Let your customers know what is going on that day and get some buzz going ahead of time!

Need help marketing your small business? Med City Brewing can help! Whether you need help with branding, web, direct mail, or social media we are here to help YOU!

Your Logo Matters! (Effective Logo Design)

What makes an effective logo? While to some extent that question may be as broad as "what is art?", it is an important question for businesses to keep in mind when creating a new brand, keeping consistency within the brand they already have, or rebranding. Here are several things consider when evaluating your branding:

Is your logo appropriate?

Does your logo speak to the correct audience for your business? Do the colors, fonts, and graphics speak to not only the title of your business, but also the purpose.

Is your logo memorable?

Is there some element of your logo, whether it be font, color, or graphic that makes it stand out and independently represent your brand? And, yes, you want your logo to be interesting, but is is so cluttered and busy that someone won't be able to recall your logo at the mention of your business' name (or even worse want to look away because it is just too much)? Which leads into...

Is your logo simple?

Now, this doesn't have to mean your logo needs to be as simple as the Nike swoosh or the Target bullseye, but it is something to seriously consider. While you want your business name to be present for someone who may be unfamiliar with you as of yet, you also may not want to overwhelm a logo with all the text you can think of. There is a time and a place for email, phone numbers, and addresses, and that doesn't need to be solidly embedded in your logo.

Is your logo versatile?

When you turn your logo from full color to one color, is it just as effective? This may not seem incredibly important (and you might always want your logo in color!). However, if you are ever want to keep costs down by printing a single color logo on a promotional product, or place an ad that can only be in black and white, you may have to consider the incredible importance of a logo that can be versatile.

New logo or old, Med City is here to help your brand have a strong, consistent voice and be represented in it's best light.

Is Your Website Really Mobile?

Is Your Website Really Mobile?

Google’s new mobile search algorithm, dubbed as “mobilegeddon,” launched on April 21. If you’re worried about how this update is impacting your business, here are some straight-forward steps to evaluate your current situation.

Why is it important for your website to be mobile-friendly?

According to a recent comScore study, smartphones and tablets combined to account for 60% of total digital media time spent, up from 50% a year ago, so it makes sense that Google wants to ensure the best possible experience for its users.

Significant impact on search results. Websites that are mobile-friendly are now more attractive to Google’s search engine, while websites that are not mobile-friendly will be pushed down in search results.

Create a positive user experience. A mobile-friendly design, engaging content, user-friendly navigation, and fast page load speeds are all characteristics of a high quality website that contribute to higher search ranks, improve conversion rates and ultimately result in more new customers.

A powerful extension of your online marketing. According to comScore, social networking now generates more than 70% of its activity on mobile. If you are sharing links and don’t have a mobile-friendly website, you’re not only going to experience high bounce rates and low conversion rates but also a frustrated audience.

Is your website mobile-friendly?

Take Google’s mobile-friendly test at google.com/webmasters/tools/mobile-friendly  to confirm if Google considers your website to be mobile-friendly.  Just because your home page is mobile friendly doesn’t mean the rest of your site is, so check each individual page.

Check how Google ranks your page speed and user experience at developers.google.com/speed/pagespeed/insights.  This tool will provide a numerical score, while also providing tips for improvement.

Finally, get a sense of your overall mobile traffic by reviewing your site’s analytics. If you use Google Analytics, you can navigate to Audience > Mobile > Overview and look at the breakdown of desktop / mobile / tablet.  Your site’s mobile traffic should absolutely factor into your business decision regarding mobile-friendly updates.

While “mobilegeddon” is upon us, it is not too late to make needed updates.  Reach out to a website development resource to discuss your options.  Having a mobile website is no longer simply a nice feature, but rather it is a necessity that will impact the growth of your business.
